273 U.S. submarines patrolled against the enemy during
world war II. Although they comprised less than 2% of the total
U.S. Navy strength, they caused more than half of Japan’s sea
losses. These sinkings, which took almost half a million Japanese
lives, however, were made at the heaviest relative cost of American
lives of any branch of the U.S. Armed Services. One out of every
seven American submariners died for a total 3,505 officers and
enlissted men. The service lost one out of every five submarines: 52
sunk or “missing presumed lost..
